Barbell Full Clean

BarbellAdvanced

The Barbell Full Clean is a dynamic weightlifting movement that combines strength and technique. It involves lifting the barbell from the ground to your shoulders in one fluid motion.

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and the barbell over your midfoot.
  2. Grip the barbell with a shoulder-width grip, keeping your back straight.
  3. Initiate the lift by extending your hips and knees, pulling the barbell upward.
  4. As the bar reaches your knees, explosively extend your hips and shrug your shoulders.
  5. Quickly drop under the bar, catching it on your shoulders in a squat position.
  6. Stand up to complete the lift, ensuring your elbows are high and your core is engaged.

How to perform the Barbell Full Clean

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Barbell Full Clean using your barbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your primary working muscles.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your working muscles rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
