Barbell Hang Clean

BarbellIntermediate

The Barbell Hang Clean is a dynamic exercise that develops power and strength. You start from a standing position with the barbell at thigh level.

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding the barbell with an overhand grip.
  2. Lower the barbell to just above your knees while keeping your back straight.
  3. Explosively extend your hips and knees, pulling the barbell upward.
  4. As the barbell rises, drop under it and catch it on your shoulders in a squat position.
  5. Stand up to complete the lift.

How to perform the Barbell Hang Clean

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Barbell Hang Clean using your barbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your primary working muscles.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your working muscles rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
