Barbell Mixed grip Deadlift

GlutesBarbellIntermediate

The barbell mixed grip deadlift is a variation of the traditional deadlift that utilizes a mixed grip for improved grip strength and stability.

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and the barbell over the middle of your feet.
  2. Grip the barbell with one hand in an overhand grip and the other in an underhand grip.
  3. Engage your core, keep your back straight, and push through your heels to lift the barbell.
  4. Stand up straight, fully extending your hips and knees at the top of the lift.
  5. Lower the barbell back to the ground with control, maintaining a straight back.

How to perform the Barbell Mixed grip Deadlift

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Barbell Mixed grip Deadlift using your barbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your glutes.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your glutes rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
