Barbell Step-Up

1. Start by placing a barbell on your upper back. 2. Stand facing a bench or step with your feet hip-width apart. 3. Step one foot onto the bench or step, fully extending your hip and knee. 4. Drive through the heel of the foot on the bench to lift your body up onto the bench. 5. Bring the opposite foot up onto the bench. 6. Step down with one foot, lowering your body back to the starting position. 7. Follow with the other foot, stepping down completely off the bench. 8. Repeat the movement, alternating the leading foot for the desired number of repetitions.

How to perform the Barbell Step-Up

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Barbell Step-Up using your barbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your glutes.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your glutes rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
