Barbell Zercher Squat

Step 1: Place the barbell on a squat rack at a height that allows you to comfortably grip it while standing. Step 2: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly turned out. Step 3: Position yourself facing the barbell, lower your body down, and reach forward to grasp the bar with an underhand grip. Step 4: Lift the bar off the squat rack and hold it in front of your body at the height of your mid-chest, with your elbows bent and upper arms parallel to the ground. Step 5: Brace your core, engage your glutes, and keep your chest lifted as you lower your body into a squat position, pushing your hips back and bending your knees. Step 6: Descend until your thighs are parallel to the ground or slightly lower, maintaining an upright torso and keeping the weight centered. Step 7: Pause for a brief moment at the bottom of the squat, then push through your feet, driving your hips forward, and extending your knees to return to the starting position. Step 8: Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions, maintaining proper form and control throughout. Note: It's important to start with a weight that you can comfortably handle and gradually increase the load as you become more familiar with the exercise.

How to perform the Barbell Zercher Squat

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Barbell Zercher Squat using your barbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your quadriceps.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your quadriceps rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
