1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. 2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at arm's length, palms facing your thighs. 3. Bend your knees and lower your body into a partial squat, keeping your back straight. 4. Explosively extend your hips and knees, simultaneously shrugging your shoulders. 5. Pull the dumbbells towards your shoulders, keeping them close to your body. 6. Rotate your wrists and flip the dumbbells over as they reach shoulder height. 7. Catch the dumbbells at your shoulders, palms facing forward. 8. Lower the dumbbells back to starting position with control.

How to perform the Dumbbell Clean

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Dumbbell Clean using your dumbbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your forearms.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your forearms rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
