Dumbbell Lateral Step-Up

The Dumbbell Lateral Step-Up targets the lower body, focusing on the glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings.

To perform this exercise:

  1. Stand beside a sturdy bench or step with a dumbbell in one hand.
  2. Place the foot closest to the bench on the step.
  3. Push through your heel to step up onto the bench, bringing your other leg up.
  4. Lower back down to the starting position with control.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions before switching sides.

How to perform the Dumbbell Lateral Step-Up

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Dumbbell Lateral Step-Up using your dumbbell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your calves.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your calves rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
