Kettlebell Step-Up (VERSION 2)

The kettlebell step-up is a lower body exercise that targets the legs and glutes.

To perform the exercise, hold a kettlebell in one hand and step onto a sturdy platform with one foot.

  1. Stand in front of the platform with the kettlebell at your side.
  2. Step up onto the platform with one foot, pressing through your heel.
  3. Bring your other foot up to meet the first on the platform.
  4. Step back down one foot at a time to return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

How to perform the Kettlebell Step-Up (VERSION 2)

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Kettlebell Step-Up (VERSION 2) using your kettlebell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your glutes.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your glutes rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
