Start by hanging from a bar with your arms fully extended. Use a swinging motion to generate momentum, swing your body backward then forward. As you swing forward, pull your body upward with your arms, driving your chest toward the bar. Quickly push your hands down and away from the bar while pulling your hips toward the bar simultaneously. Complete the movement by bringing your chest over the bar, pushing upward to straighten your arms, and rotating your wrists to a pronated grip. Reverse the movement to return to the starting position with arms fully extended.

How to perform the Kipping Muscle Up

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Kipping Muscle Up using your body weight.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your pectoralis major.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your pectoralis major rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
