Right Hook. Boxing

Body WeightIntermediate

The right hook is a powerful punch used in boxing to strike an opponent from the side. It is executed by rotating your body and pivoting on your back foot.

  1. Start in a boxing stance with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Bring your right fist back to your cheek while keeping your left hand up to guard your face.
  3. Rotate your hips and shoulders to the right as you throw your right fist forward in a hooking motion.
  4. Follow through with the punch, ensuring your elbow is at a 90-degree angle.
  5. Return to your starting position and prepare for the next punch.

How to perform the Right Hook. Boxing

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Right Hook. Boxing using your body weight.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your primary working muscles.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your working muscles rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
