Smith Low Bar Squat

Place the barbell on a squat rack at a lower position. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and position yourself under the bar, resting it across the back of your shoulders and upper back. Grasp the bar with an overhand grip wider than your shoulder width. Step back and ensure your feet are firmly planted on the ground. Keep your core engaged, chest up, and maintain a slight arch in your lower back. Bend at the hips and knees simultaneously, lowering your body down slowly until your thighs are parallel to the ground. Pause for a moment and then push through your heels to return to the starting position. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

How to perform the Smith Low Bar Squat

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Smith Low Bar Squat using your smith machine.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your calves.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your calves rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
