Walking High Knees Lunge

Start by standing tall with your feet hip-width apart. Take a step forward with your right foot into a lunge position. As you lower your body down, bring your left knee up towards your chest, as high as possible. Keep your core engaged and your back straight. Push off through your right foot to bring your right leg back to the starting position while simultaneously stepping forward with your left foot into a lunge position. As you lunge with your left leg, bring your right knee up towards your chest. Alternate between the right and left legs, continuing to walk forward while performing high knees and lunges.

How to perform the Walking High Knees Lunge

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Walking High Knees Lunge using your body weight.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your calves.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your calves rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
