Cable Hip Abduction (toe out)

GlutesCableBeginner

Stand next to a cable machine with the pulley set at the lowest position. Attach an ankle strap to the cable and secure it around your outer ankle.

  1. With your feet hip-width apart, shift your weight onto the leg closest to the machine.
  2. Keeping your knee slightly bent, lift your outer leg away from your body, rotating your toes outward.
  3. Pause at the top of the movement, then slowly return to the starting position.
  4. Complete the desired repetitions before switching to the other leg.

How to perform the Cable Hip Abduction (toe out)

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Cable Hip Abduction (toe out) using your cable.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your glutes.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your glutes rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
