Kettlebell Step-Up

The kettlebell step-up is an effective lower body exercise that targets the legs and glutes.

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy bench or platform with a kettlebell in one hand.
  2. Step up onto the bench with one foot, pressing through the heel.
  3. Bring the other foot up to meet the first on the bench.
  4. Step back down one foot at a time, returning to the starting position.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch the kettlebell to the other hand.

How to perform the Kettlebell Step-Up

  1. Set up. Set up in a stable, balanced starting position appropriate for the Kettlebell Step-Up using your kettlebell.
  2. Brace and execute. Brace your core, control the descent, and move through a full pain-free range of motion while emphasizing your quadriceps.
  3. Reset. Reverse the movement under control and reset between repetitions, keeping your form crisp on every rep.

Coaching cues

  • Move with intent — every rep should feel deliberate, not rushed.
  • Drive force through your quadriceps rather than momentum.
  • Keep your breathing steady: exhale on the hard part, inhale on the reset.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight and losing positional control.
  • Cutting the range of motion short and missing the target muscle.
  • Letting your spine round or hyperextend instead of staying neutral.
